Ileana tucked her knees under her chin, watching as the group she was traveling with slept. She yawned quietly, trying to not fall asleep since she was the one that had pulled the first shift of watch. She shifted in her spot, trying to get comfortable - but not comfortable to fall asleep (even if that was what she desired - sleep could come later, once she was off her turn for watch, which would be within the next two hours, she thought, biting her lower lip as she did). Sasha padded over and laid her head on the girl's lap and Ileana gently stroked the soft fur of the wolf. "You awake too, your majesty?" she asked quietly, smiling down at the female wolf. "I'm grateful for the company," she murmured. Her dark eyes alighted on the approaching cursed wizard, and a small shy smile crossed her lips. "Wolf," she said, bobbing her head in greeting.
"I'll take over," he said, his voice not as gentle as it had been when he had been human, well, pure human. Greywolf knew that even though his head, hands and feet were a wolf's or that he was covered with fur, that the girl sitting before him still viewed him as human - even if he didn't view himself in the same fashion - he wasn't human, not anymore. He reached over and placed a paw on her shoulder. "Sleep, 'ana," he said quietly, affectionately shortening her name, without realizing it. "You're exhausted and your powers will do you no good if you're too tired to use them."
Ileana shook her head slightly, a faint smile crossing her pallid features. "I told Conan that I'd take this watch. I'm barely useful as it is, Wolf. I need to do something to prove that I'm not as useless as Conan thinks I am," she said softly, continuing to stroke the female wolf's soft fur, whether or not to calm her frayed nerves as all open to debate. All she seemed good for was a few healing spells and that was the extent of her magic - that and managing to create orbs of light for when they traveled at night.
Wolf let loose a soft bark of laughter, keeping it quiet so he didn't wake the others. "I think I'm more useless then you," he said, settling down next to the female since it was clear she wasn't going to go to bed like the good little girl he viewed her as. "I stopped being useful when I was cursed by Mesmira. I can't even use my magic when my hands are like this." He knew he sounded bitter but he was allowed, given his current state.
Ileana reached over and placed a small delicate hand on the paw closest to her. "We will free you, Wolf," she said quietly. "You and Sasha and Misha," she reaffirmed, trying to make even herself believe it. She had been found after he had been cursed so she knew him no other way. It would be strange, she thought, to see what he was really like when he was freed from the lupine curse. She yawned softly and curled up close to him, resting her head on his furred chest. Her dark eyes slowly fluttered shut and she fell fast asleep.
Wolf smiled and held her close as she slept. Conan couldn't fault her - she had been ill and her body was craving sleep to try and get the healing, the recovering started. After several long moments, he scooped her up, subconciously scooping her up bridal style, and carried her inside one of the tents they had set up. Jezmine stirred slightly, propping herself up to see Wolf entering the tent she was sharing with Ileana.
"Greywolf?" she asked, her voice thick with sleep, using his real name since Ileana was asleep and wouldn't know who that was.
"Ileana's been ill. It was foolish to have her sit and keep watch. I'll finish her shift," he said quietly, smiling down at the slumbering female. He laid her down gently, placing a chaste kiss on her temple before slipping out of the tent.
Jezmine smiled at that before drifting back off to sleep. Yes, they were a cute couple - and maybe this would get him to stop moping about his curse since Ileana cared little about what he looked like. In fact, she had a feeling Ileana would be disappointed when Greywolf became himself again.

Ileana examined the lamp that the others had discarded, a faint frown on her lips as she rubbed it, trying to make out the writing on the side - hadn't the others seen the writing? "From the land beyond beyond," she murmured, reading the writing aloud. "From the world past hope and fear... I bid you, genie, now appear." She gave a startled cry when the genie *did* appear. "Oh my," she breathed. She cast a glance over to the rest of the group, none of which had heard her startled cry. That pained her a little - clearly indicating that she wasn't needed, that no-one needed, wanted her. She sighed quietly and gave a small smile up at the genie. "Hello," she whispered, smiling.
"Hello," the genie said quietly, gazing down at the maiden who had summoned him, the maiden with the purest of hearts, the light of lights. He knew her fate - one of several possible fates, he mentally amended and came to stand before her. "As the one who summoned me, it is you has earned a wish."
Ileana bit her lower lip as she thought, musing over what she could wish for. Her gaze drifted over to the wolfen sorceror and she knew. Knew it in her heart that this was the best use of her wish. Why wish for something vain when there was someone who desperately needed something more then she? She bit her lower lip a little harder, drawing a faint trace of blood.
"I wish.." she started, trying to find the words. "I wish Wolf.. to be free of the curse that condemns him, makes him live his life away from others, the curse that makes him not a pure man, but some damned mixture of man and beast. That is my wish."
~
Ileana raised her hand to her eyes, trying to block out the sun. Sun seemed to be a bit brighter, not that she could understand why. At least it wasn't just her that thought it was too bright, as she saw the others shielding their eyes as well, well.. all except Wolf. Now that she really thought about it - she didn't see him. She did, however, see a strange male approaching her.
She took a fearful step backwards before he caught her hand with his. There was something familiar about his gaze.. and the smile. "Wolf?" she ventured, her voice catching
"Yes," he said quietly. "Although, that was only part of the truth. I am Greywolf of Xanthus," he said quietly.
Ileana drew back, half stunned, half afraid. He was *that* wizard? Her dark eyes widened and she couldn't believe it. She had been in love with him for so long, crushing on him from a far but now.. Now that he was here, she was afraid, literally petrified with fear.
Greywolf reached over and touched her face with his hand. "Although, you knew me better as Wolf," he said softly, allowing the gruffness of Wolf to slip into his voice. He smiled when the smile slipped across her face as she recognized him at last. He allowed her to curl up against him, wrapping his arms around her so she was safe within his embrace. "It was you who freed me, Ileana. And for that, I'm forever grateful."

Greywolf held the delicate battered body of the woman he had come to love in his arms, watching as the life faded from her paling features. Tears streamed down his face as he held her, trying vainly to force his magic to connect to hers, pull her magic back to her, to try and have it do the impossible and bring her back. "Don't leave me," he whispered.
Ileana's dark eyes opened for a moment, a soft smile crossing her features as she looked up at him, love still in her gaze. "I love you," she whispered before her eyes shut slowly and she slowly slipped away.
Greywolf bolted awake, fear coloring his features until he glanced at the sleeping figure next to him, all curled up against him. He smiled and watched her sleep, knowing just her being there, curled up against him, would banish the dark remains of that nightmare. She had become the light in his darkness, a welcome reminder of the good days. He brushed a stray lock of hair off her face, watching her draw closer to the source of the touch.
Ileana stirred, propping herself up on her elbow. "Nightmare?" she asked, staring up at her love's pale blue eyes. "Third this week." She yawned quietly, just content to watch him right now. There was a soft smile crossing her lips as she looked up at her life long lover (or what felt like life long).
He reached over and placed a hand on her stomach, smiling as he could feel the life dwelling within, guarded safely by his and her magic - the only child with the power to draw not only on the winds but light as well (although, the very aspect of the light he or she'd be able to control was unknown). "Can't help it," he said quietly. "I worry about you and the baby."
"Women have been having babies far longer then I have," she sleepily murmured. "Everything will be fine." She snuggled closer to him and drifted off to sleep.
Greywolf smiled at her sleeping form, content to watch her sleep for now. He'd use his magic to divine what gender the unborn baby was later. He hoped for a son, to carry on his name, his line.. but he wouldn't be opposed to a girl child... since he knew his beloved (and he'd have to marry her soon) would love a daughter. |
